The Allure of Pebble Mosaics

I’ve always been a bit of a pebble enthusiast. Maybe I inherited this obsession from my grandparents, both geologists whose garden was filled with beautiful stones they had gathered on expeditions. Laying the Foundation

Arranging the Pebbles

Working in small batches, I mix up the mortar, using a wheelbarrow and a hose with a spray nozzle. The consistency should be that of a stiff pudding, with just enough water to moisten the mixture. I spread the mortar onto the prepared base, keeping it about half an inch lower than the finished grade.

As recommended in the Fine Gardening article, I prefer to set the smaller pebbles on edge, with more than half of the stone embedded in the mortar. This ensures they’re well-attached and less likely to dislodge later. I work in sections, pressing the pebbles tightly together and leveling the surface with a piece of plywood and my own weight.

To create patterns, I use pebbles in contrasting colors, spacing them as closely as possible to minimize the amount of visible mortar. After each section is complete, I carefully spray away any displaced mortar, then trim the edges with a trowel or small pick ax before moving on to the next area.

Maintaining the Mosaic

As the mortar dries, it’s important to keep the surface moist for a few days to prevent cracking and flaking. If there’s a film of mortar left on the pebbles, I’ll use a solution of muriatic acid (also known as hydrochloric acid) to dissolve it, being sure to wear appropriate safety gear.

Should a pebble become dislodged in the future, I can reattach it using a small amount of Thinset, a polymer-based tile adhesive. The contrasting color helps it blend in seamlessly.
