Once the base is ready, it’s time to start laying the mosaic. I work in small batches of mortar, covering about 3-4 square feet at a time. The key is to work quickly, as the mortar will start to set within 20 minutes or so. I place the pebbles sideways, with the flattest side facing up, and press them firmly into the mortar, making sure they’re closely spaced and the mortar is kept to a minimum.

After each section is complete, I use a piece of plywood to level the mosaic, pressing down to ensure the pebbles are evenly embedded. Then, it’s just a matter of continuing the process, section by section, until the entire project is finished.
